A jaw crusher comprises two steel pieces: a stationary piece that forms a V-shaped chamber and a moving piece called the pitman. The majority of the crushing occurs in the bottom third of the chamber, and all materials that enter the chamber are crushed to the appropriate size.

Its swinging hammers crush and shatter the material upon impact, with the resulting particles bouncing off the breaker plates and into the hammer circle. From there, they are transferred to the grate assembly, where larger particles are ground down as they move across the grate surface.
