How Does a Crusher Work
What are the different stages a stone crushes takes to crush rocks?
- Feeding
- Crushing
- Screening
- Segregation
Crushers are heavy-duty machines specifically designed to break down large solid materials into smaller and more manageable pieces.
In the Philippines, they are used to utilize different forms of natural resources, including minerals and rocks that are essential components in manufacturing industrial and construction materials. That’s why they are commonly used in various industries, such as the construction, mining, and recycling industries.
But how does a crusher work? That depends on its type and the crushed materials, but they all go through 4 essential stages: feeding, crushing, screening, and conveying.
Feeding
A crusher is fed by an Excavator or Backhoe with the material to be crushed through its hopper that’s located at the back of the machine.
The size and design of the hopper or chute depend on the type of material that will be crushed, as well as the size of the crusher. Some materials may need to pass through a Scalping Screen even before feeding them into the crusher to remove the Fines that don’t need to be crushed, any oversized materials, or contaminated and foreign debris.
Crushing
The materials fed into the crusher enter the crushing chamber and are crushed when hit by the Hammers against the Impact Walls by the rotating Rotor powered by the diesel engine.
Depending on the type of crusher you use, the materials may be crushed through impact, shear force, or compression. Any of these breaks the material down into smaller pieces or particles.
If you’d prefer impact crushing, the material is then accelerated by a fast-moving rotor and impacted against an impact wall designed to beak materials into several pieces upon impact. Meanwhile, shear crushing cuts or shears the material using the rotating blades of the crusher. On the other hand, compression crushing crushes material by squeezing it between two surfaces until it breaks apart.
Screening
After the crushing process, there’s no guarantee that the material won’t contain any unwanted debris or particles. This is why it may need to be pre-screened using our Scalpers to separate the by-products you need prior to crushing.
The screening process involves passing the crushed material through a vibrating screen This machine consists of a perforated plate or a mesh that segregates the crushed material into different sizes such as G1, ¾, 3/8, and fines.
Conveying
After the crushing and screening processes, the materials will be segregated and stockpiled waiting for delivery.
Segregation is via a conveyor belt system at the bottom part of each deck of the screen. This is a belt supported by rollers or slider beds and powered by an electric motor to rotate or move the belt. It is responsible for stockpiling the screened material to its desired area at the plant.
There are different types of conveyor belts, such as Chevron belts, rubber belts and steel belts. It also has pulleys, rollers, and idlers to help you guide the belt. Due to its unique parts, it helps you transport the crushed and screened materials to their next destination easier.
Types of Crushers
There are various types of crushers designed to reduce the size of materials. They are jaw crushers, impact crushers, gyratory crushers, cone crushers, roll crushers, and hammer mills. Each of them has its unique applications.
Jaw Crusher
The Jaw Crusher is a type of crusher that uses a movable jaw and a stationary plate to crush materials, such as concrete, rocks, and minerals.
Application: mining and construction industries
Impact Crusher
A crusher that uses high-speed Impact Hammers and Impact Walls to crush materials inside the crushing chamber to its desired sizes.
Here at Multico, we offer Mobile Impact Crushers and Screens from Rubble Master. These are self-contained machines and more compact versions of heavy-duty equipment that also come with user-friendly controls. It also is fuel efficient, low cost of operation, silent, and low on emissions.
Here are the Crusher models that we offer;

- RM 70GO! 2.0
- RM 90GO!
- RM 100GO!
- RM V550GO!
- RM 120GO!
Application: mining, construction, and recycling industries
Hammer Mill
The Hammer Mill uses high-speed rotary hammers to crush and shred materials, such as wood chips, grain, and biomass.
Application: agriculture and biomass industries
Gyratory Crusher, Cone Crusher, Roll Crusher
Gyratory Crusher, Cone Crusher, and Roller Crusher are types of crushers are using a mantle and a concave surface to compress and crush materials, which means they’re the ideal crushers to use when you want to compress your materials instead of impacting or shearing them.
Application: mining and aggregate industries
